Woodpecker tongue

Red-bellied Woodpecker: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — I caught the Red-bellied Woodpecker for the first time yesterday on the mealworm feeder. It may have been using it all along, and I just missed it, but it might have been its first attempt. Maybe it saw the Hairy using the same technique and thought to give it a try. I got a few shots of the awkward pose through the double glazed deck door, but this one shows the woodpecker’s tongue…something we do not often see. Sony a6700. Dissecting sunflower

Tufted Titmouse: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — I aways wonder if our feeder birds actually get any energy benefit from the sunflower seeds we put out for them. They spend, it seems, a lot of energy opening each seed one at a time to get the kernel out. Still, I figure they must know what is best for them, and they keep taking sunflower seeds. Of course they could just be sunflower addicts. That would not be good and I would not feel good about enabling them. I bet someone has studied this. I should look it up. The Tufted Titmice and Chickadees are the most obvious about this…coming repeatedly to the feeder to take a single seed and fly off to a perch to dissect it. Sony a6700. Chickadee

Black-capped Chickadee: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — The chickadees have developed a taste for mealworms…not surprising I suppose…most of our deck birds take a mealworm when they can get one, either scattered on the deck from filling the feeder or at the feeder itself. Yummy stuff! And I don’t begrudge them, as long as the leave enough for the bluebirds. Sony a6700. Sigma 16-300 at 450mm equivalent. Program mode with bird and wildlife modifications. Hairy arrow

Hairy Woodpecker: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — This Hairy Woodpecker has absolutely no fear of me. It came into this perch on the back deck while I was standing 15 feet from the base of the deck, and moved from here to the suet feeder which is a foot closer. It was not that it was not aware of me…it just did not care. 🙂 Sony a6700. Sigma 16-300 at 450mm equivalent. Program mode with birds and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator.
Titmouse

Tufted Titmouse: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — Sometimes the birds are almost too close. This Tufted Titmouse landed right above me while I was standing at the base of our back deck and I was able to get on it and get a shot before it flew away. Not the most attractive pose perhaps, but very much titmouse! Sony a6700. Sigma 16-300 at 450mm equivalent. Program with bird and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator.
Winter nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatch: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — on a cold clear December day after snowfall overnight I bundled up and went out to wait on the feeder birds. The White-breasted Nuthatches are always faithful. We have 2, or maybe 3 coming to the deck at the same time. The light was ideal. The bird was close. The pose was typical. What more could you ask. Titmouse in the snow

Tufted Titmouse: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — another bird in the snowfall from a few days ago. This time at Tufted Titmouse. We have an unusual number of Titmice coming to the feeders this fall. Up to 5 at time, traveling together, somewhat out of sync with the mixed feeding flock that comes. Sony a7CR. Snow day bluebird

Eastern Bluebird: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — Another snow day bird. This is our resident male Eastern Bluebird…the patriarch of at least 6 years of broods in our neighborhood, and veteran of 6 Southern Maine winters. Not his first snowstorm. Sony a7CR. Tamron 150-500 at 500mm. Program with bird and wildlife modifications. Processed in Photomator. Shot through the double-glazed deck door.
Snow bird

Dark-eyed Junco: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, December 2025 — Juncos are sometimes called “snow birds” as they winter with us here in the US, and are common around feeders or in other sheltered spots where they can find food. And photos of them without snow just never look right 🙂 We had our first significant snow yesterday and the Junco were active around the feeders all day long. Sony a7CR. Tamron 50-400 at 400mm. Flight against the light

Ring-billed Gull: Kennebunk, Maine, USA, November 2025 — Occasionally one of the gulls working the surf where the river meets the sea would get up into the wind and sail overhead. Sony a6700. Sigma 16-300 @ 450mm equivalent. Program with birds and wildlife action modifications. Processed in Photomator.
